The US is currently undergoing an aggressive "dividing and conquering" campaign deployed with a multi-layered granulated strategy. If I had no moral sense and had unlimited access to money and executive power, it's exactly what I would do to bypass time and take a social engineering shortcut.
Imagine this process as a fast speeding train headed toward a massive wall. If you were on the train, jumping off would be painful or even deadly. To take control of the train you'd need to (1) bypass the mechanisms designed to keep you away from the engine, and, (2) have the expertise to operate the train IF you managed to reach the engine.
However, if you're not in the train, there is only one way to board the train while at full speed. If you managed to board it, you would have the two obstacles listed before (1&2).
However, if you find yourself watching the train speed by, you might also decide against attempting to board it and assume control over it. The risk at hand would outweigh the potential benefit in that case.
A train speeding towards its demise might not seem to be your problem. This is by design. The rate of survival is part of the calculation.
Your kids are on that train and to those in charge, they are just a number.
The only way to resist social engineering gone bad is to dream alternatively and act accordingly.
