I must begin by explaining what I mean by "Raising Your Voice" and then to briefly state why I believe it to be not only part of our second nature, but crucial to our future.
Please note that this article is unconventional. I am still writing it and I have no intention of finishing it. We all change almost every day (hopefully), as we grow in our understanding of life. So shall this article. It is after all a declaration of independence, a journey of critical thinking, a leap of imagination, A Part Apart from the world at-large.
I am certainly not going to finish this article, as it is a ongoing conversation with a smart person, as my beloved Grandmother used to say about when one talks to oneself...but rest assured that it is not mean to be an exclusive 1-on-1 digital chat - YOU too are invited to read, think, and even join the conversation.
When raising our voice, we must not shout, or whine, complain, or scream. We must not even sing or whisper. There is no "must." There is only purpose.
Shout, if you must. Whisper, if desired. Sing, if you're longing. Your Voice can carry it all and in every amplitude or tone as you may feel the need to make yourself heard. Acknowledged.
To me, raising your voice means making yourself known and acknowledged. It serves you as an exercise in humanity and it possibly serves others, as a beacon of hope and inspiration maybe. To raise your voice also means to react and respond to the events taking place around you and in your life or others'.
To be alive, in other words.
Raising your voice is the sublime and unique manifestation of YOU. It is the multi-sensorial print of your consciousness as it makes and leaves behind its mark in everyone else's consciousness. Raising your voice is proof that you exists and proof that we exists - as we acknowledge you. Even if you raise your voice in the deepest and most profound of silences.
This is a BIG secret, if you pause to think about it.

Raising your voice can be an act as modest as declaration of love, or a call for friendship...but, at the same time, it can be a heroic act of activism, a claim to history, or a bright light in the darkness. The purpose informs your voice. Your voice changes us, the rest of the world who hears it.
A Part Apart is my voice in the context of one of the most disruptive periods in our history. Your voice will sound different and will bring its own message. Life is a symphony, when we respect each other. If only one voice can be heard while others fall silent, that is a bad omen of times of struggle and despair.
We all need to be heard and acknowleged. When a single voice covers all others, dark clouds have risen, but your voice and my voice combined can - and should - turn into beacons, helping us all to navigate the storms.
This is one of the resons to raise your voice - but there is another.
When darkness falls, when fear silences all voices, and when history scatters our hopes too far apart to reach, that is why raising our voices becomes a defiant act of survival. Survival not necessarily in the physical sense - althought that may be too - but in the sense of remaining anchored in the existence of humanity.
When darkness falls and spreads, raising our voice becomes an act of virtue and we become humanity's repository of dreams - to shelter and to share forward, ensuring that future generations will still remember where we came from and what we dreamt of becoming.
When darkness falls, our risen voices become guiding stars for the voyagers of the future. Our future. Our children's future.
And that's why I write. That's why you should too.
