I absolutely know that life goes on. That we're all busy with our lives, kids schedules perhaps, and what's for dinner. These are normal, ordinary realities for a human living a relatively normal life.
As you read this here, on my “A Part Apart” blog or on Facebook, you're one of the lucky ones having the privilege to breathe peacefully, knowing with certainty that the next moment will not come with a bomb or a bullet, and that you will also always find something to munch on in your kitchen, or in the store at the corner of the street.
This peace of mind however, numbs the soul as well. Comfort numbs and insulates us from the tragedy of others, granting us permission to ride high on consciousness and morally cocooned, while human suffering blooms and wrecks havoc…elsewhere and for others; not us.
We accept this as”normal” and go about our daily lives, “connecting” on social media by exchanging likes, pictures of our special dinner, or our cats.
Privilege is a bubble which we accept and expect; a “status quo of being” - slow moral poison for us, fuel for the monsters sowing fear and atrocities against humanity.
Privilege is the reward for our complicity to evil as we turn a blind eye and remain numbingly silent in the midst of humanity's cry for help.
We are capable of amazing feats, even spectacular greatness when we support each other and cooperate, and yet, numbed by our busyness to ensure the status quo of our comfort, we surrender our power and potential to a system and handful of entities for which we're nothing more than a mere number and statistics.
Seduced by the promise of comfort, our potential, skill, and ultimately our entire life itself fuels the growth of pain and suffering of humanity itself. We do not exist in a vacuum.
In our ignorance, we perpetuate and help sustain a status quo and a truth otherwise impossible to ignore:
That human civilization rests - and always has rested - on the shoulders of giants…and monsters.
The battle between Evil and Good seems real, however it's not really a true battle, but rather an intricate - hypnotic even - dance on shaky moral grounds; a spectacle of shifting powers to which we are spectators and protagonists.
Rome knew the minds of masses and perfectly executed what is now a model for our times.
Why is this happening?
Mostly because we haven't been taught otherwise. Nonetheless, times have changed, and we can change too. Being a decent human takes some effort, but a future without famine, bullets, and dystopian societies is well worth our mental, emotional, and especially moral investment.
Don't you think? What is the alternative anyway - a comfortable neutrality!?
"If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” ~ Desmond Tutu
